About MMORPGs
RuneScape is the world’s largest free-to-play MMORPG. To help you understand a little more about these types of games, here’s a brief overview.
MMORPG stands for 'Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game': a computer-based Role-playing Game (RPG). These often take the player into a fantasy world of adventures and quests; however, instead of it just being a single player (or a limited number) playing against the game, as is usually the case with console games, these games have a huge number of other players joining the adventure at the same time. Here, you are able to interact, join forces, or battle against one another.
Most adventure RPGs are hosted globally on a series of servers to ensure they are available for players anytime, anywhere. This global community of millions (in the case of RuneScape) helps make the gameplay so interesting, varied and exciting.
Unlike RuneScape, many of these games require you to buy and download game software before you get started. Browser-based games like RuneScape allow you to simply connect to the internet and play straight away, meaning there is no requirement to install the game – just turn on your PC, log in, and play!
What is a Free Online Multiplayer Game?
RuneScape can also be described as a free online multiplayer game, meaning you have access to a range of quests and activities absolutely free – no need for downloads or credit cards. Just register, create your character, and start playing. There's also the option of paying a small monthly subscription, giving you access to a huge number of additional quests and a richer gaming experience – but that's up to you. Other games might ask you to pay for items within the game, or charge monthly, or both.
